Google just released their 2025 Vulnerability Reward Program numbers, and honestly, they’re impressive. The company paid out $17.1 million to 747 security researchers who found bugs in their systems. That’s an average of about $23,000 per researcher – not bad for what many consider side work.

What strikes me about this isn’t just the dollar amount, though that’s certainly eye-catching. It’s that Google is essentially crowdsourcing their security testing to nearly 750 people who are actively looking for ways to break their systems. Think about the collective hours that represents – probably more than most companies spend on internal security testing in a decade.

The program seems to be maturing too. When bug bounties first started gaining traction, there was skepticism about whether they’d attract serious talent or just script kiddies looking for easy money. Google’s numbers suggest they’re getting quality researchers who can find meaningful vulnerabilities worth paying for.

Critical Patches That Can’t Wait

Speaking of vulnerabilities that matter, both Splunk and Zoom pushed out patches this week for some seriously concerning flaws. The vulnerabilities include critical and high-severity issues that could let attackers execute arbitrary shell commands or escalate privileges.

If you’re running either platform, this isn’t a “patch next week” situation. Let that sink in for a moment. A victim reported a crime, and through what appears to be a catastrophic process failure, the police gave the alleged perpetrator access to everything on her phone. Photos, messages, contacts, apps – everything.

This goes beyond a technical security failure into the realm of institutional process breakdown. Someone, somewhere in their system, thought it was appropriate to hand over a victim’s complete digital life to the person she was seeking protection from. The fine is deserved, but the real damage here is to trust in the system.

What This Means for Us

These stories paint a picture of a security community that’s simultaneously getting more sophisticated and still struggling with basics. Google’s bug bounty success shows that collaborative security models can work at scale when properly implemented. The urgent patches from major vendors remind us that even well-resourced companies ship vulnerable code.

The quantum cryptography discussion highlights how we need to balance immediate threats with longer-term strategic planning. And the Police Scotland incident serves as a stark reminder that all the technical controls in the world don’t matter if your processes and people aren’t aligned with your security goals.
